From Damascus to New York: My Journey, Passions, and Goals

|

Hey everyone! My name is Kareem Alchorbaji (he/him). I was born and raised in Damascus, Syria, until the age of nine, and then I came to the United States of America. Now I’m a resident of Staten Island, New York, and it has been about ten years. Living in Syria and growing up in a Muslim/Arab household, I grew up speaking, reading, and writing Arabic. Unfortunately, I have forgotten how to read and write fluently, but I’m trying to learn the Arabic language again. Of course, I speak English, but even in English, I’m not the best. Maybe language isn’t my thing—I like math. As of today, I’m 18 years old, a freshman at City College of New York, as an undeclared engineer, planning to major in Computer Science. In my junior and senior years of high school, I had the opportunity to take Computer Science classes, and I was able to learn programming languages such as Python, Java, SQL, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and more. Now I’m taking online courses to enhance my coding skills, and I keep practicing coding until I hopefully get into the Grove School of Engineering. I have two main problems with writing. The first is procrastinating. I believe I picked up this bad habit during my freshman year of high school when everything was remote due to COVID. Since classes were online, I didn’t really care about doing work because everything felt so much easier. I would wake up, stay in bed, join a Zoom meeting, and not do much work. But then I would get stuck for hours trying to complete an assignment that was posted weeks ago. My second problem is grammar. There’s not much to say about why my grammar is bad—I just need more writing practice. On the other hand, I like reading more than writing, and one of my favorite books is the Quran, a religious text in Islam, for two main reasons. One, I can always refer back to this book and feel guided. It gives me a sense of purpose in life and teaches me how to be successful. The other reason is that I can’t find another book that is as full of wisdom and accurate morals. Now, a book I dislike is any Shakespeare book. Why? Because it’s not easy English. Lastly, here are three cool things about me. I can ride a bike with no hands. I learned this about two years ago when I bought my brand-new bike (now it’s broken). My friend was able to ride with no hands, so that motivated me, and slowly but surely, I learned after failing hundreds of times. I also like going to the gym because who doesn’t want muscles? Although, I need more gym time. Finally, I enjoy all types of food. Food is so good! I don’t like criticizing food, and I hate people who criticize food.
